International Center for Climate Governance

The Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) – a joint effort of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and World Bank (WB) – is a new platform aimed at enhancing and expanding efforts to address major knowledge gaps in green growth theory and practice, and to help countries design and implement policies to move towards a green economy.

Green growth means:
fostering economic growth and development, while ensuring that natural assets continue to provide the resources and environmental services on which our well-being relies. GGKP focuses on the synergies and tradeoffs between the environmental and economic pillars of sustainable development, aiming at being a catalyst of knowledge-generating initiatives and programs within a wide range of research agencies, experts, researchers and pratictioners.

ISC 2012: 2nd Call for Contributions

Coming back to our first announcement in October 2011, we would like to
again draw your attention to the International Sustainability Conference
2012 organised by the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern
Switzerland, School of Business, in association with the University of
Basel, Program Sustainability Research.

Deadline: February 25, 2012

The conference will be held from Wednesday 29 to Friday 31 August 2012
at the University of Basel, Switzerland. The central theme of the
conference is “Strategies for Sustainability: Institutional and
Organisational Challenges”.

Currently, the following keynote speakers confirmed their participation
so far:

* Professor Christian Christensen, Professor of Media &
Communication Studies, University of Uppsala
* Professor Anil Gupta, Professor at the Centre for Management in
Agriculture of the Indian Institute of Management and
Coordinator of the Society for Research and Initiatives for
Sustainable Technologies and Institutions (SRISTI) and the Honey
Bee Network of India
* Professor Bryan Norton, Professor of Philosophy, Science and
Technology in the School of Public Policy, Georgia Institute of
Technology

The organisation committee encourages scientists, managers as well as
decision makers from various disciplines to attend the ISC 2012 and
present the outcomes of their research and/or case studies in line with

Contributions can be submitted before 25 February 2012 using the online
submission form (except for sessions, see below), to be found on
http://www.sustainabilityconference.ch/cms/index.php?page=call-for-contributions. The following types of contributions to the conference can be submitted:

Abstracts (academic sessions)

Abstracts contributing to the scientific debate should present either
conceptual reflections or results of empirical research within the
conference theme.

Cases (best practice sessions)

Cases should cover best practice examples, strategic concepts and
practical solutions to sustainability challenges in the public,
non-profit or business worlds.

Additional full sessions (academic or best practice)

For the first time the ISC 2012 offers the possibility to submit entire
sessions, consisting of 3-5 contributions. Researchers working on a
sustainability-related topic can take advantage of this opportunity and
present their work in the frame of an own session. Please note that all
session contributions must be provided and pre-reviewed by the session
owner. These sessions under the responsibility of an external session
contributor might be held in other languages than English. The
scientific committee will subsequently review the complete session and

Winter School “Limits to Growth Revisited” (November 24 to December 1, 2012)

The buzzword of our time, “sustainability”, is closely related to a book
published 40 years ago, in 1972: “The Limits to Growth” by an MIT
project team involving Donella and Dennis Meadows. Only few things seem
to have changed since then. Again the various developments in different
societies call for new matching modes of thinking that promise a secure
future for everyone. What is smart or good growth? Why are so many
findings of the report still unresolved? Will there be solutions? And
which ones could that be?

In order to give fresh impetus to the debate, the Volkswagen Foundation,
who funded “Limits to Growth”, aims to foster new thinking and the
development of different models in all areas related to the “Limits to
Growth” study at the crossroads of natural and social sciences.

The Winter School “Limits to Growth Revisited” (November 24 to December
1, 2012) is directed specifically at highly talented young scholars from
related disciplines.

Deadline: April 30, 2012

The Volkswagen Foundation intends to grant this selected group of post
docs and PhD students the opportunity to develop new hypotheses, ideas,
and questions. These results will be presented at an international
conference on “Limits to Growth” in Hanover held by the Volkswagen
Foundation and Dennis Meadows together with high-ranking international
experts from various disciplines on the “Limits to Growth” topics. The
conference will take place in Hanover (Germany) on Wednesday, 28 and

Programme on Climate Change and Sustainable Development

FEEM, a leading research institute on sustainable development (www.feem.it) is looking to recruit a motivated and talented senior researcher to cover an open position within the Climate Change and Sustainable Development Research Programme.
The applicant would join a team that is engaged in analysing a wide range of issues about climate and energy economics, such as economic modelling of climate and energy policies, technological progress in the context of energy technologies, socio-economic drivers of energy demand in developing economies, the relation between energy and development, the functioning of global energy markets etc.
The candidate will be involved in the integrated assessment modeling group and focus part of her/his research on the quantitative assessment of climate impacts and policies.

Requirements
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in economics, or in energy engineering/mathematics/physics coupled with a solid economic background, and experience in applied research on environment and energy issues.
The selected candidate will interact with researchers of different nationalities, and have the chance to present scientific papers at several conferences and workshops. Parts of the activities are realized in the context of European research projects. FEEM offers a truly interdisciplinary workplace, with strong ties with a world-wide network of research institutions engaged in environmental research and in particular on the analysis of climate change issues.

The successful candidate is expected to begin his/her assignment in 2012. The appointment period can be up to 3 years, with an evaluation after the first one. Gross salary is competitive and will be based on qualification and experience. Duties will be carried out at the FEEM premises either in Milan or Venice, Italy.

The EU – Network of Excellence LIAISE invites applications for its Winter School 2012: Tools and Modelling in Impact Assessment

Based at the Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig, Germany, LIAISE was established as part of the European Commission’s FP7 work programme (2009) as a Network of Excellence (NoE) to improve the application of Impact Assessments (IA) by both the research and the policy making communities. LIAISE combines the multi-disciplinary competences of a core group of well respected European research institutions with the consolidated experience developed from a wide range of relevant FP6 and FP7 projects.

The focus of the LIAISE Winter School will be on Impact Assessment (IA) as a general
procedural framework for policy appraisal in decision-making processes. Policy-level impact assessments such as Regulatory Impact Assessment (RIA) and more recently Sustainability Impact Assessment (SIA) have been applied over the past years in different venues all over Europe. To support policy assessments within such generic frameworks, different methods and tools can be deployed. These can help to generate or structure scientific evidence, to design possible future scenarios or to model complex and dynamic social, economic or environmental developments. TIAS will also run a session at this event.

New Project: ‘Hamburg Water Cycle (HWC) – Jenfelder Au’ about economic feasibility of an integrated and decentralised wastewater disposal and energy generation system, approved funding under EU LIFE+ (Project duration: 2011-2016)

The project’s overall objective is to demonstrate the technical, environmental and economic feasibility of an integrated and decentralised wastewater disposal and energy generation system for an urban housing district in Hamburg, Germany. The concept will bring together well-known technologies, as well as new and innovative prototypes – to be demonstrated for the first time on a large-scale. The system will be developed in different phases, in accordance with the different phases of construction.
